Ford Recalls 550,000 Fusions And Escapes

Ford Motor Company has announced a major recall of 550,000 vehicles because of an issue that could cause the cars to roll away while the driver believes their vehicle is in "park." The recall affects Ford Fusion sedans from 2013-2016 and the 2013-2014 Ford Escape SUV

Ford explained that the issue stems from a faulty bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission. If the bushing falls off, the driver could shift into "park" but the vehicle could remain in another gear, which could cause the car to roll away.

Ford said they received no notifications that the issue caused any accidents or injuries, but according to Forbes, at least 30 complaints were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and three of those people suffered injuries.

In 2014, an owner from Georgia said her vehicle appeared to be in park but when she got out it began moving and the door "flipped her half-way around." When she hit the ground it ran over her foot.

Ford said they will notify owners by July 30th and expect to have replacement parts by the end of the summer. In the meantime, the automaker suggested that drivers use the parking brake to ensure the car does not move.
