BIG SEAN: Giving Back to Detroit

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Big Sean launched his foundation in 2012 and he's obviously remained committed to it and to his hometown.
  • It's so important not to forget where you come from.
  • The fact that Sean's mother is running his foundation says a lot about who he is.

This coming Saturday and Sunday are big days for Big Sean.

The rapper will attend multiple events as part of his hometown's Detroit's On Now Weekend, which his foundation is putting on in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan.

At a media-only event on Saturday, he'll help inaugurate the Sean Anderson Foundation Production Studio at the Dauch Boys and Girls Club. It's a place where kids interested in careers in entertainment and fashion can learn the nuts and bolts of both businesses.

He'll stick around the Dauch campus for an appearance at a block party that will include job, health and life assistance programs, in addition to music and dance. That will be followed by a mental health panel he'll take part in alongside author and scholarMichael Eric Dyson and celebrity psychiatrist -- and friend of Beyoncé-- Dr. Jessica Clemons.

On Sunday, he'll lead a free night of bowling at Garden Bowl in Detroit's Majestic complex that's open to anyone who signs up through Eventbrite.

Sean's mom,Myra Anderson, who runs his Foundation, tells theDetroit Free-Pressthat DON Weekend "came out of him wanting to do something for the city — and acknowledging the people still in the city who didn't leave for the suburbs, the people who have stayed in Detroit."
