VAPING: Sixth Person Dies From Respiratory Illness

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • The vaping epidemic has prompted a Congressional hearing, set for later this month.
  • The CDC says people should stay away from vaping until investigators figure out what's making people sick.
  • Most of those developing the illness have been in their late teens, 20s or 30s, but the Kansas death shows vaping is a danger to older individuals as well.

Officials in Kansas confirmed Tuesday that a woman in the state became the sixth person in the U.S. to die from respiratory illness related to vaping.

Doctors said that vaping led to the woman's death, though she was over 50 years old and had a history of medical issues.

Dr. Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, told NBC News, "She had some underlying medical illnesses, but nothing that would have foretold the fact that within a week after starting using e-cigarettes for the first time, she developed full-blown acute respiratory distress syndrome and died."
